Kryten is a robot who is commanded to serves people. Lister would always try and stop this command and break his programming so he could explore what life is like without having orders, such as telling him how to cheat, lie and develop emotions. Kryten feels that his purpose is just "to serve and have no regard for himself". The crew first met Kryten as they received a distress call from him after alerting them that his ship contained Women. However, Kryten was dead after the end of his first appearance on the show but Lister bought him back alive and then became a full member of the Red Dwarf crew, which had disastrous consequences after he failed after trying to learn how to pilot Starbug 1.
